Vocal Journal 2

Vocal Journal 2

Qualities of good singing:

1. Good breathing.

2. Good control of timbre, dynamics and tone. Flexible.

3. Each word and phrase must be of the same comfort level and relax in any part of the song. Chorus should also be as relax as verse even when there is a climax. Even when hitting higher notes. Should be as relax as talking.

4. A good tone should be a display of both good dynamic and flexibility. Not just dynamic alone. The more relax you are, the tone will be the more flexible and dynamic.

5. Relax jaw, neck and shoulder are physical qualities of good singing. (Learn from the OPERA video where the teacher asks the student to move around and even play the drums as that she can notice her own body)

6. Open throat/cavity. Throat should be the place where the tone resonances and it should not be forced out, which will make the tone sounds harsh.

7. Pop tone will be project more towards the front, which will be the mask.

8. A good tone should have a soft attack, not a glottal stop. The initiation of tone should be well balanced and not harsh. A GOOD TONE WILL USE THE ATTACK OF THE MASK.

9. The release of the tone should not be abrupt.

10. Tone should sounds like a thread exiting from the mouth. Like give away your voice as a gift to someone. (Elena Ng)

11. Vowel and consonant should be well pronounced. Especially consonants as it spell out or clarify the word. (Adrian Poon says)

12. Sing from the heart, not create sound. (Elena Ng)

13. Stand rooted and firm, with the focus on the lyrics and yourself as a performer or an instrument.
